Disabled Participants in Qualitative Research

Research participants are the raw materials of qualitative consumer insight, but do traditional methodologies systematically exclude some of the most creative potential contributors? Disabled people generate ideas and solve problems continually, just to get by in a world not adapted to their needs, and they are masters of technology and innovative uses too. In an aging population, their voice and spending power is growing every year – but all too often the methods, approaches and even the venues used by qualitative researchers exclude people with disabilities. This presentation will challenge researchers and research buyers to rethink this, and hear from former research participants in the UK about their issues and experiences.

Speaker: Maya Middlemiss

Maya MiddlemissMaya Middlemiss is the managing director of Saros Research Ltd, who specialise in participant recruitment in the UK. Pioneering a database-driven approach in the market at the turn of the century, Saros have a positive commitment to widen access to research participation as broadly as possible, giving researchers fresh and untapped sources of insight and ensuring everyone has a fair chance of influencing the brands and services they use. Maya’s role centres on database development and business development as well as managing the dispersed Saros team, and she writes and speaks on location independence, entrepreneurialism and social media, in addition to her passion for professionalism in participant recruitment. She firmly believes that having the right participants leads to high standards in research, which in turn informs excellence in strategic decision-making at all levels: consumer insight matters.
