Workshop Details: Getting Below Top-of-Mind – The Power of Effective Probing
Asking questions is straightforward. Getting more insightful, below top-of-mind answers is a skill that requires repetition and practice. After leading more than 6,000 groups and countless IDIs, and teaching hundreds of moderators along the path from novice to seasoned, Ms. Henderson has mastered the art of probing, and she is going to share with us how to be more effective moderators.

Her material will be designed for both less experienced and very experienced moderators. Most moderators have figured out that the best QREs come from good baseline questions and good probes. This workshop will dive deeply into the context of probing and expand your knowledge base in this area, and provide ways to help respondents give below top-of-mind answers with ease.

Even experienced moderators can learn some new tricks! We will review what top-of-mind is, probes that make a good moderator, the makings of a stellar probe, and the overall probe landscape. Session will include a demonstration of six key probes that are most effective and some appropriate interventions to get below T-O-M. An open forum for participants to discuss probes they have found effective to get respondents to open up will also be part of the agenda.

Handouts will be provided so your note taking will be minimized and hallelujah, you won’t have to look at any PowerPoint slides!

About the Speaker
Naomi Henderson has been working in research since she graduated college in the 1960’s. Her lifelong passion started with quantitative work: “Asking the Questions” and moved on to qualitative work in the late 1970’s when she discovered the fun of “Questioning the Answers.” She has had the privilege of talking to people from all walks of life from the homeless to the privileged and has been the midwife to the birth of a score of new products and services. Quoted in the New York Times, Forbes, and American Demographics gives her credibility in an industry of unsung heroes. The RIVA Training Institute celebrates over 30 years in business in 2015 and is considered the gold standard for moderator training globally. Webinars, blogs and tweets give her a forum to share her ideas and techniques. She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from American University in Washington, DC and certificates of completion in Synectics and Group Dynamics and is a licensed practitioner of NeuroLinguistic Programming. In her free time she enjoys traveling abroad [she has one more continent to visit: Antarctica] and she enjoys writing poetry, making jewelry, listening to country music and reading.
