2013 Annual Report
The QRCA Board is excited to share the 2013 Annual Report with our members!
QRCA has been creating annual reports for several years. They provide a great opportunity to summarize key events and accomplishments, highlight our wonderful volunteers, and share financial and membership information. Annual reports are useful both internally and externally. For members, they provide a historical record of progress; recognize volunteers and award-winners; and serve as an accountability tool for the organization to its members. Outside the Association, the annual report is a useful tool for sharing the great work that is being done by QRCA members, and in educating the wider research community about our organization.
As I review the past year and as I participate in a number of activities that will shape our future as an organization, I’m reminded of the amazing people in our ranks and the many accomplishments we’ve made. While there continue to be areas for improvement and growth, it’s also important to take a moment to celebrate the great work we have accomplished over the past 12 months. Many thanks to all those who have contributed to QRCA this year. And, for those who are not yet “plugged in,” now is the time to take the leap. Connect with Jeff Walkowski (QRCA Matchmaker!). He will help you find your best place within QRCA. You’ll meet incredibly bright and fun people, stretch professionally and personally, and have a blast along the way. Getting involved delivers immeasurable value from your membership: you won’t regret it.

Action! From the Board

Your 2014 Board of Directors met March 10, 2014, via conference call to take care of the organizations monthly business. Updates to report from this meeting include:
- The 2014-2015 Strategic Plan was finalized and approved.
- Current membership stands at 708 members after dropping 209 non-renewed members and adding 13 new members during the month of February.
- The AQR/QRCA Worldwide Conference is just around the corner – April 30-May 2, 2014. As of February, 59 people registered to date, which is ahead of the last two joint conferences at this time.
- The board of directors is in process of forming a new holistic marketing committee for the organization. Working towards this goal, the board agreed to end its current contract with our current public relations firm HART.
- Three exceptional conference videos have been completed and one video interview with 2013 Global Outreach Scholarship winners. Find them posted on QRCA.org soon.
The Board of Directors will meet again April 14, 2014, at 1:00pm Eastern time.

Spread the Word…2014 Global Outreach Scholarship
It feels like yesterday that Ilka and I interviewed Jorge Bueso and Pablo Sanchez Kohn at the end of the San Diego conference. I cannot believe that it is almost time to launch the 2014 Global Outreach Scholarship. As in the past, I want to call on all of our members to help us to spread the word about this wonderful opportunity for two deserving candidates to attend the next conference, which will take place in New Orleans from 15–17 October 2014. Apart from the educational value and networking opportunities, the monetary value of these scholarships is over $2000 per candidate and includes free conference registration, up to $1000 towards travel expenses to attend the conference, and free membership for the remainder of 2014. As you may know, the awarding of the two annual Global Outreach Scholarships is a QRCA project that is very close to my heart. When I look back and remember the nine candidates that have benefited from this endeavour, I feel that we as an organization have played a worthwhile role to share the benefits and advantages of QRCA membership that we enjoy, with colleagues from afar who would not have been able to attend under normal circumstances. Every year, we see the amazement in their faces and hear the inspiration in their testimonials after their conference experience. It is our objective to empower them to spread their excitement about qualitative research to the countries and research communities from which they come and to build awareness and increase the stature of QRCA in the process.
I would therefore like to pay tribute to the members of the International Committee who annually organize and promote the Scholarship, who with typical QRCA caring and dedication, scrutinize all the applications to fairly compile the short list, who interview them with compassion providing the opportunity to introduce and present themselves in the best possible way, and who then labor over the difficult decision of whom to award the scholarships to. Thank you to Farnaz Badie, Manuela Fletcher, Ilka Kuhagen, Mark Lovell, Diva Oliviera, Pat Sabena and Julia Spink for your volunteer time and passion!
I would also like to use this opportunity to reach out to all the international members of QRCA on behalf of the Board of Directors, International Committee, and Virtual Chapter. I have first-hand experience of the sometimes lonely journey of an independent consultant in a far-off country and of how membership in QRCA has enriched my life and broadened my personal and professional horizons over the past 10 years. I can also testify that this does not happen when you lurk in your comfort zone, but only if you step out and become involved. I would like to invite you to reach out to me (my email address is at the top of this article) and to let me know what we can do to help you to engage more meaningfully with other QRCA members and to benefit from your membership. I encourage you to join the Virtual Chapter as well as a SIG (Special Interest Group) that matches your field of interest, both of which host virtual events during the year. But most of all, I recommend that you make the effort to attend the annual conference. That is where you will reap the most tangible return on your investment by absorbing the educational offerings and experiencing our unique QRCA culture.

In accordance with the QRCA Bylaws, the 2014 Nominating Committee’s work is underway in identifying potential candidates to serve on the QRCA Board of Directors. How can you help the Nominating Committee do this important work?

We also welcome applications from members who want to recommend a fellow QRCA member for this role.
