Variety is the Spice of the 2015 QRCA Annual Conference

Kate Wagenlander,
Jeff Walkowski,
2015 Conference Speaker Subcommittee Co-Chairs

2015 qrca conference

Have you registered yet for this year’s QRCA annual conference? If yes, whoo hoo!! We are so looking forward to seeing you! Not registered yet? Be sure to do it now to make sure you take advantage of the early bird registration discount!
There is a lot of variety in this year’s conference programming. What sort of variety, you ask? So glad you did! Well, there is variety in terms of session length (30 to 90 minutes) and in presenters: with new and “veteran” presenters, QRCA members as well as non-members, and speakers from across the globe including North America, Japan, and the UK.

And let’s not forget the variety in terms of the subject matter. There’s certainly something for everyone at this year’s conference. There are presentations geared toward those who are newer to the profesion, and ones that will appeal more to those who are established in the industry. We created some tracks to help bring the content to life a bit more for you as well as you work to determine which presentation to attend. There will be at least one presentation in each of the following eight categories (or “tracks”):

  1. Frameworks for Research – Considerations that impact study design and process
  2. How Do We Get Who We Talk To? – Issues related to recruitment
  3. Interviewing Skills/Approaches – Tools and techniques for gathering data
  4. Dealing With and Presenting Data – Tips for analysis and report-writing
  5. Client Management – How to more effectively work with clients
  6. Strengthening Your Business – Marketing tactics and ways to protect your practice
  7. All Things Digital – Technological tools in qualitative research
  8. Provocative Food for Thought – Other issues important in our profession

Do not fret; we are working to include these tracks in the conference program in a grid illustrating the track under which each presentation falls.  So, if you see some tracks that pique your interest you will be able to easily find out which presentations fit within that space.  Basically, this is another way to help you determine the way you can, personally, get the most out of the conference.

We are also trying something new this year. A block of sessions on Friday will be known as “Double Features.” Attendees will choose between one of three of these.  Each Double Feature will consist of two presentations (two different presenters) on a related topic. Thus, attendees will get two points of view. The presentations are meant to support/complement each other.  Rather than having to choose one session on the topic, attendees get to watch two presentations at once. One of the Double Features is about gamification in qualitative research, one is about cognitive interviewing approaches, and the other is about mobile technologies that enable us to get closer to our respondents.

The entire conference program (descriptions of each session and presenter bios) is available online here.  A quick review of the info will show that the program certainly fits the theme of this year’s conference: “Whole New World of Research.”  We look forward to sharing it with you. See you in October in Orlando!!

Ilka Kuhagen,
Corette Haf,
Co-Chairs, QRCA’s International Committee

The International Committee is happy to announce the winners of the two 2015 Global Outreach Scholarships:

  • Foundation Scholarship: Amoné Redelinghuys, Research Specialist at Columinate, Johannesburg, South Africa
  • Advanced Scholarship: Mokeira C N Masita-Mwangi, CEO of Research Plus Africa, Nairobi, Kenya

Amoné Redelinghuys
Mokeira C N Masita-Mwangi
Mokeira C N Masita-Mwangi

As in previous years, candidates applied for two international scholarships:

  • The Foundation Scholarship is open to qualitative researchers who are relatively new, and establishing their career path in this field.
  • The Advanced Scholarship is awarded to well-established qualitative researchers seeking to expand their knowledge of methods and techniques to maximize the value of projects they plan and execute.

International Committee representatives compiled a candidate short list for each scholarship. The shortlisted candidates were interviewed, with the recordings made available to the rest of the committee to discuss and select the winners.

Everyone will have the opportunity to get to meet Amoné and Mokeira at the QRCA Annual Conference in Orlando in October, as well as through more detailed interviews in future editions of Connections.

Ilka and Corette thank the International Committee for their time and dedication during the selection process. We also thank everyone who helped promote the Global Outreach Scholarships.

Help Us Find this Year’s Maryanne Pflug Spirit Award Winner!

Missy Carvin,

As the most recent recipient of the Maryanne Pflug Spirit Award, I am thrilled to ask for your help in finding the 2015 recipient of this terrific honor.  The Maryanne Pflug Spirit Award upholds and celebrates QRCA’s amazing heritage of collegiality among members and commitment to the organization, and is awarded to a member who demonstrates “spirit” in the association. You know – the people who are otherwise described as “friendly,” “bubbly,” “funny,” or maybe even “great huggers.”

Presented each year since 2003, this award honors the memory of a much-loved and cherished former QRCA member and his or her contributions to QRCA.  The recipient is selected by a committee of former recipients, from candidates nominated by members.  The award is a large, laser-engraved martini glass, in honor of Maryanne’s favorite beverage. (That fact alone should tell you all you need to know about this award!)

Please take a moment to think about a QRCA member who exhibits the qualities and characteristics that Maryanne embodied: friendliness, creativity, commitment to QRCA, leadership, optimism, humor, mentorship, a passion for life, and unconditional positive regard for all. Do you have somebody in mind? Please nominate her/him!

To nominate someone, fill out the online form with your nomination. Or email Missy Carvin at and include your nominee’s name and a short statement (50-75 words will suffice) explaining the QRCA member’s qualities and why he/she deserves the award.  Think of your statement as a testimonial.

Nominations need to be submitted by Tuesday, September 1.  A committee of past recipients will review the nominations and decide the 2015 recipient.

Please note that each member must submit her/his own, separate nominating statement.  Saying, "I nominate him/her too!” is just not enough enthusiasm to honor Maryanne’s memory.  Also, it doesn’t help to simply copy somebody else’s nominating statement because we want to really know why your nominee deserves the award.  Have it come from your heart.

There are a few other items to note at the link above, but it’s all pretty straightforward. I hope we have many great nominations this year and our job is difficult!

QRCA’s Social Media: Do You Follow?

Laurie Pumper,

QRCA is socially connected beyond LinkedIn with a Facebook page, Twitter account, and Pinterest and Instagram accounts. We encourage you to follow us on as many of them as you use, or even explore a new platform to get familiar with it. Each of these is a great resource to stay connected with QRCA and fellow members.

Facebook: Our group is open to QRCA members only (so far, only about 120 people are group members). It’s a great place to share fun photos from QRCA events (including Chapter and SIG events) and other information that’s of interest only to other members.

Twitter: Our Twitter handle is @qrca and is open to members and nonmembers. We have more than 1200 followers on this platform. We use it to provide quick updates about our activities, including VIEWS articles and Annual Conference; if you attend the conference, we invite you to share photos and observations by using the #QRCA2015 hashtag. We also have a #QRCAprize hashtag that we’re using to promote membership by young professionals.

Pinterest: This link takes you to the board for the 2015 QRCA Annual Conference. Right now, we have some photos of our conference hotel on the board. We will post information about our Dine-Arounds and other fun visuals here. (Members are welcome to post to the board, too!)

Instagram: Search for QRCA if you are on Instagram. Although we haven’t used this platform very much yet, we are planning to use it for the 2015 Annual Conference. It allows you to share your photos from the conference and other QRCA activities.

LinkedIn: Of all QRCA’s social media platforms, this is the one used by most of our members already. The group has more than 11,000 users! Use it to take part in discussions started by members and non-members, ask your questions about good facilities, and to share information about QRCA and/or qualitative research in general!

Sponsor a Young Professional in 2015!

Shannon Thompson,

Following a successful pilot year in 2014, QRCA is again offering grants to young researchers to enable them to attend our annual conference in Orlando.  This Young Professional Grant (YPG) helps QRCA attract young qualitative research professionals to engage with our members and organization in order to strengthen the research community.

QRCA is seeking partners to sponsor one of these young researchers at the discounted rate of $625 each or $3,000 for five recipients.  These partners can be an organization or an individual who is interested in supporting the next generation of researchers.  All grant partners will be recognized in the onsite conference program and know that you are helping bring new researchers into the QRCA fold.

To become a YPG Partner, fill out the online form here. Any questions can be directed to Shannon Pfarr Thompson at
