From the President

Monica Zinchiak, monica@zresearchservices.com

2015 has been a dynamic and challenging year for QRCA.

As a volunteer organization we’ve accomplished much, and I want to take this opportunity to thank the dedicated and giving QRCA members who help advance our members’ skills and raise QRCA stature in the industry.

Specifically, I want to thank…

  • All the members who share their incredible knowledge and talents through the annual conference, Qcasts, Connections, VIEWS magazine, chapter & SIG meetings and the Member Forum.
  • The elite members and Ewald staff who maintain our valuable industry partner relationships. These partnerships open opportunities for professional speaking engagements, networking, partner conference discounts and advocacy on behalf of the market research industry.
  • Every member who enhances the value of the QRCA experience. For me this has been finding new strategic partners, maintaining a higher level of competency and increasing the value I bring to all personal and professional interactions.
  • Our sponsor partners, through their conference and publication support as well as their generosity with facility/platform, professional training and certification discounts.
  • QRCA member wisdom, and their ability to see industry changes that must be addressed to ensure continued organization sustainability.  Membership expansion was the first overdue step I feel has helped push us in the right direction.
  • The leaders of this organization. Especially the board of directors with whom I currently serve. I truly appreciate your experience and wisdom guiding this organization.

As a last bit of thanks: I am overjoyed the next annual conference has moved to January 2017. Now I can more easily manage my fourth-quarter business; and even more…appreciate the fact it will take place closer to home in Los Angeles.

One final reminder: I am monitoring the member forum closely in preparation for the board’s annual strategic planning meeting in January. Please forward any questions and comments to the QRCA Suggestion Box in the Member Forum — or contact me directly at Monica@zresearchservices.com.

I look forward to hearing what’s on your mind.

Action! From the Board

Corette Haf, QRCA Secretary, corette@qualonline.co.za

The April 2016 Worldwide Conference budget was approved at the November 16 Board Meeting. This budget includes discounted registration fees for industry partners and researchers (members and non-members) in low GDP countries in order to make attendance affordable.

The board also approved:

  • A partnership with the Market Research Directory to offer members discounted listings.
  • An Annual Partner program enabling sponsors the opportunity to reach members throughout the year.

The next Board meeting is 21 December, and will be followed by the annual in-person summit 10 – 12 January 2016.

Since Connections is not published in January, the next board update will be in the February edition.

Getting to Know Your Board

Corette Haf, corette@qualonline.co.za

I’m writing this piece just before the American Thanksgiving holiday.

Although this tradition is not followed in my native South Africa, I find myself reflecting on the merits of celebrating this holiday far and wide.

In my own life, there is much I appreciate at present… a few of the things at the top of my list include:

  • My 87-year-old Mom, who lives independently, enjoys good health and still ‘gives’ so much to her family and community.
  • Sharing my life with my husband of 36 years; in particular after witnessing the pain of a close friend who (not by her choice) became a divorcee this past year.
  • My spirited daughter, who is finishing her school career and embracing a new season in her life as a university student.
  • The fact that business has picked up after a few sluggish years.

I am particularly grateful for the role that QRCA has played in my life over the past 10+ years…for the professional impetus as well as the enriching friendships I have gained.

In my humble opinion, QRCA membership value is a ‘no-brainer’ for all qualitative consultants; even more so for those of us working on our own in emerging markets on faraway continents.

But I also know it is not always easy to afford membership fees along with the cost of registration and travel to overseas conferences when having to pay with a weak currency and have more pressing short term needs…

This is why I am particulalry grateful to the previous Board of Directors (before my term) who initiated a discounted membership fee for qualitative consultants from countries with GDPs of less than $30,000.

And I’m very excited to report the Board recently approved discounted registration fees for researchers from lower GDP countries to enable them to attend the Worldwide Conference in April of 2016. (Attendees from all our industry partner organisations will also benefit from discounted pricing.)

Please help spread the word to those in your network who may benefit from this offer. It is a very tangible way to have access to all that QRCA offers in its quest to advance the discipline of qualitative research worldwide!

My airline ticket to the Vienna conference is booked. I’m looking forward to seeing as many as possible of you there, both those from higher and lower GDP countries. In particular, I trust that many of our North and South American colleagues will make the trip to Europe and experience first-hand the value the Worldwide Conference will add to your professional and personal life.

Executive Director's Report: Policy Updates

Shannon Pfarr Thompson, QRCA Executive Director, exdir@qrca.org

I want to wish each of you a very healthy, happy, and successful 2016! I am so proud of what was accomplished in 2015, including a successful bylaws change vote, the Marketing Committee’s work to define the QRCA brand focusing on Peak Qualitative Performance, moving our Annual Conference to quarter one of 2017, and a wealth of educational opportunities through the conference, chapter, and SIG meetings and Qcasts. QRCA is a strong and vibrant organization that continues to evolve to benefit its members and the qualitative research field.

The QRCA bylaws stipulate that the Board of Directors “may adopt, modify, or rescind provisions of the QRCA Policy Documents by two-thirds vote as it deems appropriate for the conduct of its meetings and the management of the Association” (Article 6, Section 1). The Board Policy Manual goes on to say, “The Board must publicize any policy changes in a membership communication sent to all members.” (Article 4, Number 2). In this article, I want to share all of the policy changes that occurred in 2015.

If you have any questions on any of these items, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Annual Conference Policy Manual

  • Standardized references to leadership – Chair/Co-Chair
  • Changed references from fall to specific timelines (9 months, 24 months, etc.) to account for changed conference timing
  • Included the policy change allowing researchers who spend the majority of their time doing qualitative research to attend the conference

A motion was made and seconded to approve the Annual Conference Policy Manual changes with the one change being the Board retains oversight of the logo and theme approval. Motion carried. (6 ayes — 0 nays — 0 abstentions — 3 absent)

Board Policy Manual

The Membership Committee recommended offering:

A motion was made and seconded to accept the MemCom recommendation for student membership with the change that the timeframe is for two years instead of three. Motion carried. (6 ayes — 0 nays — 3 abstentions — 0 absent)

Chapter Policy Manual

  • Removed references to the Virtual Chapter
  • Changed limitations for non-members to attend two chapter meetings instead of four (and four total QRCA member-only meetings)
  • Added requirement for chapter leaders to report non-members to staff after meetings for tracking purposes
  • Non-renewed/lapsed members cannot attend chapter meetings for one year or until their membership dues are paid

A motion was made and seconded to approve the Chapter Policy Manual changes with the one change being that they cannot attend chapter meetings for one year or until their membership dues are paid. Motion carried. (6 ayes — 0 nays — 0 abstentions — 3 absent)

SIG Policy Manual

  • Changed limitations for non-members to attend two SIG meetings (and four total QRCA member-only meetings)
  • Added requirement for SIG leaders to report non-members to staff after meetings for tracking purposes

A motion was made and seconded to approve the SIG Policy Manual with the one change being that they cannot attend SIG meetings for one year or until their membership dues are paid.  Motion carried. (6 ayes — 0 nays — 0 abstentions — 3 absent)

Visual Standards Policy Manual

The Board decided that the QRCA logo should not change to match each VIEWS issue’s design, because that is bad for our brand.

A motion was made and seconded to remove the VIEWS exception to the logo usage from the Visual Standards Manual. Motion carried. (5 ayes — 0 nays — 0 abstentions — 4 absent)

Worldwide Conference

Staff worked with the Worldwide Conference leaders to develop a policy manual with policies for that event.

A motion was made and seconded to approve the Worldwide Conference Policy Manual with one change on page 6 to read “QRCA will waive between 25% and 50% of the conference registration fee for presenters, based on the type of their presentation.”  Motion carried. (9 ayes — 0 nays — 0 abstentions — 0 absent)
