Inaugural Meeting of the International Chapter Convened March 3-9

Ilka Kuhagen,

With more than 30 attendees from 12 countries around the globe, the newly re-formed International Chapter held a very successful first meeting!

Samantha Loggenberg from South Africa presented “Post Apartheid Consumerism in South Africa,” showing how various forms of freedom have influenced consumption in South Africa, as well as how these trends have evoked changing psychographics.

While this presentation was based on South Africa, it had resonance with lots of our members who saw similarities in their own countries even though in a different context. Participants asked questions throughout the presentation and an interesting discussion was sparked on the idea of humanizing brands, conspicuous consumption and taxi-ethnography!

There was an active meeting and greeting platform of old friends and new QRCA members getting to know each other. It was very useful to hear about each person there, starting to get to know a little about everyone, creating new and building on relationships. Members were excited to hear about the changes and why this chapter had been re-formed and what it seeks to do. The idea of having a chapter for international-based members – plus anyone else who is interested in developing relationships with international members – proved to be very popular. International members want to meet with their North American colleagues and exchange thoughts and experiences.

“Fascinating to hear about marketing in another country, so different from ours. It makes me reflect even more on internal differences in the places where we live.”

“I came away with a far better understanding, but also awareness of the kinds of things that I don't know.”

The meeting took place over an extended couple of days to allow everyone from any time zone and with any scheduling limitations to listen to the audio presentation and view the slides and commercial videos in a Forum format.

Thank you Focus Forums for hosting and sponsoring this event!

Minnesota Chapter Celebrates the New Year

Elaine Gingold,

It was a cold and snowy night — to be expected in Minnesota — but that didn't stop the ever-hardy Minnesota Chapter from celebrating the New Year with our annual Winter Dinner on January 5. The event was at Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano in suburban Minneapolis, where we dined on an array of fabulous Italian dishes. After five consecutive years there, we still haven't worn out our welcome!

We wish all our QRCA colleagues a happy and successful 2015!

Rocky Mountain Chapter Braves the Snow for Second Meeting

Sidney Clewe,

The new Rocky Mountain Chapter had a fantastic second meeting. Thank you very much to the Minnesota Chapter and Naomi Henderson for letting us live-stream their presentation. We met up at Prost Brewing Company as a last minute location change, and we had great discussion, good beer and delicious pizza — that’s the Colorado culture we know and love! Several students from Colorado State University who are hoping to be part of the research community after graduation also attended. Thank you to all the wonderful Rocky Mountain QRCs — a little snow can't stop us and it can't stop Nancy Hardwick, who we were happy to have in attendance, as well.
