Southeast Chapter Gets “Hands-On” with Storytelling

Linda Travis,

With rave reviews from the 2015 QRCA conference in Orlando, acclaimed presenter Kendall Nash reprised her impactful presentation, “Getting Beyond ‘Once Upon a Time’” for the Southeast Chapter’s February brunch meeting. A leader of Burke’s qualitative practice and a Burke Institute Instructor, Kendall borrows from her own mother’s novel-writing tool chest to demonstrate how researchers can move from reporting results to telling impactful stories that engage and inspire action.

So Cal Learns the Ins and Outs of Running a Successful Qual Shop

Lauren Goldberg McCluskey,

On January 22, 2016 the So Cal Chapter held a unique meeting focusing on the many aspects of running a qualitative research shop. The chapter hosted cyber-security expert Shane Purcell; renowned privacy and data security lawyer Alan Friel; CPA / lawyer Joan Roberts; insurance broker Bill Holden; and financial planner Lisa Darrin. Attendees left with tips and actionable takeaways regarding how they can structure their businesses more effectively.

Some key take-aways from the day included:

  • Be careful about what personal information facility partners collect from respondents.
  • Using client / company logo on your website could suggest affiliation or endorsement. Not only is this misleading but it could also be in violation of NDA/project contracts. While it may not look as nice, is safer to list out names of clients or agencies.
  • ETFs are more efficient than mutual funds.
  • There are security concerns about hotel or airport WiFi. Consider setting up a VPN to use on the road.
  • Long-term care insurance may be difficult to obtain for those with health issues. Some have suggested tying a long-term care policy into a life insurance policy.
  • Look into an umbrella insurance policy. This may be the way to go!

Testimonials from the event, “Get Your Sh*t Together! Business Planning for 2016:”

"What an important event! I focus so much on 'the work' that my business (and life) sometimes takes a back seat. I learned a great deal and have already met with an estate attorney and a new financial planner. I'm getting my sh*t together in 2016!"
~ Dina Shulman, Deep Dish Research (and So Cal Co Chair)

"Getting your sh*t together is a vital part of running a successful business. Since becoming members of QRCA last year we have benefitted greatly, not only from the individuals who make up this organization but the programs it creates.
