From the President

Jay Zaltzman,

Is it Worth Attending the Conference?

Wasn’t that an attention-grabbing headline? Perhaps the readers will ask themselves, “Is it? Or will he say it’s not worth attending?”

Yeah, I know: there isn’t a whole lot of suspense. Of course I’m going to say it’s worth going to the conference. But I bring up the question, because it’s a question I used to ask myself, when I was newer to the association: “Is it worth it for me to spend the time and money to go to the conference this year?” I used to actually go every other year — I felt I was being prudent with my resources.

But at some point, I realized that going to the conference was an investment that returned much more than it cost. When I attended my first conferences, I was new to qualitative research and I learned a ton. I was completely surprised by how the presenters freely gave of their knowledge, even though they were my competitors (theoretically).

But it wasn’t only the presenters. The other attendees were really friendly and welcoming. I “clicked” with quite a few people I met at the conferences and we stayed in touch. You know what happens when you’re friendly with people who do what you do and you keep in touch with them? They refer business to you!

Over the years, I’ve learned so much at the conference and I’ve made so many contacts that have led to projects, that at some point, it dawned on me: I can’t afford not to go to the conference!

I hope to see you all in Phoenix, January 24-26, 2018! Get all the information here.
