2017 Conference Is Taking Shape and Wow, Are We Excited!

Kate Wagenlander Watson,
Jeff Walkowski,

QRCA 2017 Annual Conference

Your 2017 conference committee has been hard at work over the summer, preparing for the next annual conference in Los Angeles on January 18 to 20. No kidding — this is going to be an amazing event; we cannot wait to share it with you!

Have you heard that we received a record-breaking 100+ proposal submissions for this conference? Yep. That happened. Invitations have gone out and presenters are busy working on their sessions.

Registration will launch on or around September 22. Notices will go out when it officially opens. In the meantime, we’d like to you know about some of the plans.

Several “tweaks” are being made to make the experience feel new and super-energized and to maximize the value that attendees take home. Here’s what’s planned:

  • The date. Mixing things up with our January versus September/October timing. That’s refreshing!

  • Three Full Days, starting with Demo Connections first thing on Wednesday morning and continuing till late into the afternoon on Friday. There is so much goodness we had to make it three days to fit it all in! We encourage everyone to arrive on Tuesday instead of Wednesday, to take advantage of the full range of programming.

  • Demo Connections is back — and even more robust! Based on the success over the past two years, there will be two Demo Connections sessions. This is an easy way to find out about new products and services without the “sales pressure” some feel in a one-on-one setting.

  • First Timers will meet their Ambassadors on Wednesday morning rather than Wednesday afternoon, to “plug them in” to the conference experience earlier.

  • The speaker program will be “book-ended” with plenary sessions at the beginning and end of the conference. These will provide a shared experience with all conference attendees. You’ll find out more about the plenary session speakers when the full program is announced. But, no joking, the program is spectacular! We might be a bit biased but….really, it is.

  • The Roundtables Subcommittee is putting together a stellar list of smaller and more interactive presentations/discussions. There will be two Roundtable sessions this year.

  • We are finalizing a special workshop opportunity being planned for Wednesday evening during the Dine-Arounds. “Seating” for this workshop will be extremely limited, and only those who register early will have an opportunity to be randomly selected to attend. More details on this special workshop will be provided soon. But know that you will want to be a part of it.

  • The Healthy Connections Subcommittee has come up with early-morning activities that take advantage of the neighborhood surrounding the conference venue (JW Marriott at the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles). And this year it is shaping up to be something totally different and super fun!

These are all “tweaks” to our already-successful conference formula. Here’s what worked in the past that is not changing and that you can look forward to:

  • Breakout Sessions. First-timers and veteran attendees are bound to be overwhelmed by the embarrassment of riches — so many relevant topics presented by so many high-caliber presenters. While you probably won’t be able to attend every session, you’ll be able to craft an itinerary that best meets your needs and interests.

  • The MarketPlace. Attendees and product and service providers to our industry meet here. There are usually enticements (food, beverages, drawings) to make sure attendees visit this area. It’s fun. It’s informative. And sometimes you meet a game-changer for your practice.

  • DineArounds. Two nights of smaller-group dinners. From choices put together for us by the Dine-Arounds committee, you pick who you have dinner with, what style and price-range of food you’d like, and go!

  • Thursday Night Event. The details of this are still being worked on, but it will be on site, so that attendees have the flexibility of coming and going as they please. And we know it is always a good time!

  • Plenty of Networking Time. It will be a comfortably-paced conference. There will be ample time for learning, and we’ve built in good chunks of time to tend to phone calls and emails, visit vendors in the MarketPlace, meet up with old friends, get to know new colleagues, discuss sessions with speakers, etc.

There’s still a ton of work to do, but we’re on track. This is going to be a conference filled to the gills with content, experiences, and all that we ever hope the annual QRCA Conference can be!

See Your Work through Fresh Eyes: The Annual Conference Speaker Committee

Mark Sumpter,
Kendall Nash,
Rebecca Bryant,

You’ve lost count of how many projects you’ve done for a long-term client in the same category. You rack your brain for a fresh way to bring meaningful insights, or a creative approach to gain deeper understanding. Maybe it’s a brand new client and a research problem you’ve never attempted to address before. You could be new to qualitative and still feel you have a lot to learn, or you’ve been doing it forever and go on autopilot, forgetting to check your personal biases. (You know we all have them, right?)

We’ve all dealt with one or more of these issues, and there is always room for you to become a stronger consultant and partner to your clients.

Join us in Los Angeles, CA, January 18 – 20, for the 2017 QRCA Annual Conference to learn more about The Power of Perspective!

The 2017 Annual Conference will have a powerful speaker lineup, and the opportunity to learn from other qualitative researchers, as well as from others who aren’t in our industry, but, at their core, do what we do… listen for truth and seek understanding to impact future action.

The blend of qualitative practitioner perspectives, as well as outside viewpoints, will leave you pushing boundaries and seeing your work through fresh eyes.

This year’s range of presenters is sure to provoke thought and creativity. Let us help you tap into The Power of Perspective with lessons from the Broadway stage to neuroscience, from consumers to clients, and from filmmakers to… teens.
