Moving Beyond Lean UX: Using Exploratory Research to Drive Innovation Speed and Success

With the adoption of Lean product development methods, the cycles for creating and actualizing new product concepts have become increasingly rapid. In current Lean UX methodology, qualitative research is often focused mainly on usability testing and validation of concepts. The role of the qualitative researcher in many organizations has been marginalized by the perception of many executives that traditional qualitative research methodologies take too long to produce clear insights for driving product innovation. But qualitative research has value that is frequently untapped in current Lean UX processes. Jeff will share a 5-day process that that uses qualitative research methods in the initial stages of new product concept creation to guide innovation faster than current Lean UX methods.

About the Presenter: Jeff Chen, Smartsheet

Jeff ChenJeff Chen is a User Experience Researcher driving new product development with qualitative and quantitative research methodologies since 2003. His passion is finding opportunity and meaning at the front end of innovation through insight into user needs and motivations. Some of his past work has included development of the Honda Element SC and Acura ZDX concepts at Honda/Acura, the Color Collection of computer mice and accessories at Logitech, and the Windows 10 upgrade process user experience at Microsoft. He is also adjunct faculty for UX Research at Bellevue College in Bellevue, Washington.

Jeff was in the top 12% of his MBA cohort at the Paul Merage School of Business at the University of California, Irvine. He has received training in qualitative research from the RIVA Training Institute.
