Event Description

This session is applicable to all QRC’s regardless of whether you conduct UX research or not.

“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.”
James Baldwin

User research has a problem with race. Although we design for a diverse, globalized world, our methods, processes, and frameworks are rooted in racial assumptions that have a long and ugly history in the U.S. These assumptions not only diminish the quality of our research but the potential impact our designs can have on people's lives.

In this talk, we will walk through the user research process and examine how our assumptions about race shape it from problem framing to data analysis. We will then explore several strategies researchers and designers can use to formulate inclusive, equity-driven research designs.

This SIG meeting is open to both QRCA members and non-members to encourage greater compassion and action that supports and promotes racial justice for African Americans as well as others who are marginalized. SIGs, or Special Interest Groups, are typically member-only communities that focus on specific qualitative research disciplines. Learn more about QRCA membership at qrca.org/join.
