On Jonathan Gold’s list of 101 best restaurants in Los Angeles, the lack of curb appeal or presence should not deter you. The restaurant is housed in the former Rectory of St. Vibiana’s Cathedral, the first Catholic cathedral in L.A, which is now one of the most sought-after event venues in the downtown area. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the style is casual elegance. Chef Neal Fraser’s modern American cuisine is refined yet approachable and highlights the multi-cultural influences of his native city – Los Angeles. Fraser’s menu features seasonal small and large format plates ranging from snacks or “kickshaws” to entrees meant to be enjoyed by the whole table. An extensive cocktail menu by Tobin Shea features well-balanced, bespoke renditions of the classics. Formerly in the kitchen at Fig Restaurant in Santa Monica, Chef Ray Garcia has been hinting for years that he’s capable of greatness. He is recognized for his talents in cooking all things pork! And took first place in the Aspen Food & Wine Festival “Cochon 555 competition in 2013 and 2014, beating eight star chefs from around the country. In addition to pork, his specialty dishes include: Beet tortas, tacos with fillings such as lardo and razor clams. His food is described as “sophisticated cooking that hinges on the flavors of Mexico and Latin America”. The dining room, bar and open kitchen lie long rather than deep against the windowed from of the Flower Street building. Light wood, hanging plants and geometric tiles give the room a sunny aspect. It feels homey but not hokey.

At the end of the long bakery counter is a bar, with seating exceeding that of most gastropubs, that sells snacks and sandwiches to go with the beer and cocktails. And at the rear of the space is a glamorous full restaurant, a dining room with the feel of a brasserie but a mostly American-Italian menu with lots of small dishes, like stuffed artichokes, fried calamari, clams oreganata, and a dish of mushy peas with prosciutto that could have come out of the kitchen of any trattoria in Rome; crisp-edged Neapolitan-style pizzas from the big wood-burning oven in the corner, and old-fashioned things like eggplant Parmesan, sliced steak and seasonal black cod roasted in parchment.

Greenery is plentiful in this 75-year-old family-run cafeteria, which is designed to look like Brookdale, the owner's favorite childhood destination in Northern California. It is an icon of historic Downtown L.A. The lodge-esque restaurant's signature dishes include roast turkey and roast beef dinner plates. And for dessert: old fashioned chocolate pudding. Only beer and wine is served in the cafeteria, but there are 2 bars upstairs.

A neighborhood trattoria in the downtown arts district, the Factory Kitchen was designed to maintain the character of the former fish factory’s roots while creating a comfortable yet interactive environment. Under the direction of Chefs Angelo Auriana and Matteo Ferdinandi. It features an open kitchen largely dedicated to the making of pasta. Aside from pasta, many of the pleasures on offer here come in the form of appetizers. Located in the Factory Place Arts Complex, an Arts District collection of mixed-use buildings, Factory Kitchen makes its home in what was obviously once a loading dock in the bottom of a warehouse, now converted to lofts.

This 1924 downtown "greasy spoon" owned by former mayor Richard Riordan, will make you feel like you're in a Raymond Chandler story, a clear throwback on the past, and a 24/7 chance to savor large portions of good ole diner food and decent service once you get seated. The waiters here are those old-style, true professionals. You’ll find all the classics: meatloaf, fried chicken, tuna salad, pancakes, etc. The menu is on the wall so look for the chalkboards to see the specials of the day and the standbys. This isn't haute cuisine but if you're a fan of diners it's worth a visit, especially late at night.

The mother of all hipster sausage joints and biergartens has to be Wurstküche, the “purveyor of exotic grilled sausages” of choice with good old-fashioned brats only six bucks, while those exotic links—Buffalo, Duck, Rattlesnake and Crocodile all make appearances on the menu. There are plenty of vegan choices, though they’re cooked on the same grills as meat sausages. Awesome Belgian fries and a selection of dipping sauces: Bleu Cheese Walnut & Bacon, Buttermilk Ranch, Chipotle Aioli, Thai Peanut, Curry Ketchup, Pesto Mayo, Sundried Tomato Mayo, etc. There’s a huge selection of German draft beers and patio seating.

Established in 1986, Beverly Soon Tofu Restaurant was the first Korean restaurant of its kind in Los Angeles, serving customized, made-to-order soon tofu soups. Monica Lee took the idea of the traditional soon tofu, which in Korea usually comes with soon tofu ("soon" meaning soft), clams, and vegetables in a spicy broth, and catered it to whatever the customers wanted in their soups. Tom Waits from his 1980 album Heart Attack and Vine immortalized the diner in the song ‘On the Nickel’. The song describes two estranged friends reuniting at the establishment after a long period of separation.
